Policy Leadership and Development

Public policy research is Indiana’s best tool for tackling the issues that affect Hoosiers most. National rankings show that IU faculty are the most productive researchers in the state and among the most productive in the nation. They’re also among the most engaged and caring. The Office of Engagement channels the expertise of IU’s faculty to address the problems that affect the lives of Hoosiers every day. By working together with Indiana’s business and government leaders, we’re shaping a brighter future for our state.

Hoosier Helpers

• The Center for Urban Policy and Environment funded and staffed the landmark Local Government Commission and is recommending broad-ranging changes that will lead to what it calls “leaner, more effective government.”
• We lead the state in health research. The 578,000 Indiana jobs tied to the health industry account for $21 billion in wages and $8 billion in federal and state taxes.
• Governor Mitch Daniels asked former IU dean and deputy EPA director Jim Barnes to conduct a water quality review of Lake Michigan. Barnes’ expertise led to a $3.8 billion investment in its Whiting facility and will enhance economic development opportunities in the region.
• IU’s centers, institutes, and museums focus the resources of the university’s academic departments into specialized areas of research and teaching.
